Ibrahim Abu-Lughod: "Palestine's Foremost Academic and Intellectual"

Ibrahim Abu-Lughod was described by close friend Edward Said as “Palestine’s foremost academic and intellectual.” And as Rashid Khalidi put it, his work pioneered in influencing the way that the Middle East is portrayed in both political science and in America.

Born and raised in Jaffa under the British mandate, Abu-Lughod was a Palestinian-American scholar, academic and intellectual who fled to Beirut in 1948 and later moved to the US to pursue a BA at the University of Illinois. He later did a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies at Princeton University, which is where he met Edward Said.

On completion of his PhD, Abu-Lughod spent three years working in Egypt for the UNESCO. He then returned to the U.S to forge a career in Academia, eventually settling at Northwestern University for the next 34 years. “The Arab Rediscovery of Europe: A Study in Cultural Encounters” is just one example of his many writings.

Abu-Lughod created the Association of Arab-American University Graduates and launched the Arab Studies Quarterly Journal. In 1977, he was elected to the Palestine National Council, remaining in position until 1991.

He returned to Palestine as an American citizen in the last decade of his life. There, he served as a professor and vice president at Birzeit University and died in 2001. Edward Said wrote an obituary and ode to his friend in The Guardian, calling him “a charismatic orator, and a natural leader.

‎أبو لغد باحث وأكاديمي ومفكر فلسطيني أميركي، ولد وعاش بمدينة يافا تحت الإنتداب البريطاني، ونزح الى لبنان سنة 1948، ثم انتقل إلى أمريكا لمتابعة دراسته الجامعية في جامعة إلينوي، وحصل بعدها على الدكتوراه في الدراسات الشرق أوسطية من جامعة برنستون، وهناك إلتقى إدوارد سعيد

‎بعد حصوله على الدكتوراه، عمل ابو لغد ثلاث سنوات في مصر لدى منظمة اليونيسكو ثم عاد إلى أميركا للتفرغ للشأن الأكاديمي حيث استقر في جامعة نورث ويسترن طيلة 34 عامًا. أسس رابطة خريجي الجامعات الاميركية العرب. وأطلق دورية الدراسات العربية. له عدة مؤلفات، منها مثلا، "العرب يعيدون اكتشاف أوروبا: دراسة في المواجهات الثقافية."
‎ تم انتخابه سنة 1977 لعضوية المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني، واستمر في منصبه حتى سنة 1991

‎عاد الى فلسطين كمواطن أميركي، وعاش فيها آخر عقد من حياته كأستاذ محاضر ونائب رئيس جامعة بيرزيت، وقد توفي سنة 2001
